Nighthawk

Publication date: 4/7/2024

When Totnes resident Candy Medwin takes a strange and antique figurine to be valued at the Guildhall, she meets charismatic and intelligent Perry Barr.  She also meets the anything but charismatic Jack Eaglesham, who from the moment he breaks into her house seems determined to make a nuisance of himself.  Before long Candy finds herself in an unlikely and highly unofficial alliance with undercover police, enmeshed in a maelstrom of danger and atrocious weather, submerged (in more ways than one) in ancient British history two-and-a-half thousand years old--and right in the path of a greedy, desperate man.

Reviews for Nighthawk

I was drawn into Nighthawk by Marchell Abrahams immediately. From the very first pages, the evocative detail, especially the charm of the small countryside shop, with its handmade creations, creates a vivid and inviting atmosphere that pulls you straight into the world of the story. Candy is a wonderfully engaging protagonist: intelligent, self-sufficient, and sharply perceptive, yet still just impulsive enough to find herself in situations she perhaps ought to avoid. She strikes a perfect balance, being at once capable and quick-witted, and impulsive and curious enough to create a dynamic story. She is simply great company throughout. The novel is set in a picturesque corner of Devon, and the sense of place is beautifully realised. The landscapes and everyday settings are rendered with such clarity that they feel almost cinematic. One of the book’s real strengths is how it builds tension and intrigue out of these seemingly ordinary environments. The antagonist is equally well drawn: believable, grounded, and genuinely unsettling in a way that never feels exaggerated. This adds to the overall sense of realism that runs through the story. There is also a welcome thread of humour woven throughout, which balances the darker elements and makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. Running through the story is a fascinating historical thread, centred on the antique statuettes and the legend of Brutus of Troy and his stone at Brutus Stone. This element adds an unexpected depth, evoking the sense that the present is layered over a much older human story, and that we are, in some way, only the latest participants in a long continuum of intrigue and ambition. The past never feels distant here; rather, it lingers just beneath the surface. A vivid, engaging, and thoroughly entertaining read, full of atmosphere, tension, and wit, with a subtle historical resonance that gives it added richness. Great fun from beginning to end.

Nighthawk is another brilliant novel from Marchell; beautifully written, with plenty of humour, romance, wonderful characters and fascinating history.  As the suspense grew, I raced through the last section of the book!  A great read which I highly recommend.  Looking forward to the next one becoming available!
